He should stop, take notes, and form some rule upon it; considering the place, the circumstances, the lights and shadows."
I think most of us work in this manner - We all have a process, a series of steps we work through to achieve that final image. Some of us work this process mentally - others will manually plot it - one step at a time. The important thing to remember is that no matter the method followed; you have a path that aids your understanding of the subject and one that allows you to render it beautifully.
