Fact, Legend and Mythology for the Artist
We've all heard the famous quote written by William Shakespeare (1600 AD) - "Many wearing rapiers are afraid of goose quills" ... No? How about a derivative quote from Edward Bulwer-Lytton (1839 AD) - "The pen is mightier than the sword" ... Yes! Now that one we all recognize. The Pen and its many forms have been glorified throughout history, so I have to ask - what of the pencil? Any memorable pencil related quotations come to mind? I can think of only one - author unknown "Let me pencil you in" ... historically insignificant, somewhat demeaning and it clearly implies that this pencil has a functional eraser attached.
Every time I reach for a pencil – I take for granted the fact that it will be there when I need it and that it will work as designed. This pencil, my pencil – becomes part of me as I sketch out ideas for my next “masterpiece”.
As artists, we all rely on different tools to work through our creative processes- one tool we all have in common is the pencil.
Please remember that real artists don’t doodle – we sketch!!
